Tab - Scott Brown and Martha Coakley cost Newton $121,000 Newton
- The special election for United States Senate cost the city of Newton
$121,033, according to State Auditor and Newton resident Joe DeNucci.
DeNucci said local costs totaled more than $7.8 million statewide. Last
September, DeNucci determined that the special election constituted an
unfunded state mandate on cities and towns, and therefore the local
costs should be fully funded by the state. DeNucci
said $1,572,648 has already been reimbursed to cities and towns to cover
the cost of extended polling hours for the special election, including
$24,158 for Newton. Secretary of State William Galvin dispersed
those funds to municipalities last fall. “This
is a matter of fairness for cities and towns,” said DeNucci. “The
special election imposed a significant cost at a time when they could
least afford it. I commend Governor Patrick and the Legislature for
their commitment to address this important issue.”
